Vintage 2011
As Vigneron's both Phillip & Judy agree it has been
an extremely stressful vintage, however are
pleased with the outcome.
The season started with a very wet winter,
this was great as it flushed out the salts in the
subsoil in the root zone of the vines.
Our cover crop grew to record heights
to be turned back into the soils.
The grape vines grew well with large canopies
and the fruit set well, all was looking extremely good.
The consistent temperature during the growing season
was fantastic and benefited the development of the colour
and flavours in the grapes.
However, the rain continued to fall which meant
increased pressure of the risk of disease for Botrytis,
Powdery & Downy Mildew.
We managed this by summer pruning the canopies and
spraying many preventative sprays to reduce the risk
of disease.
We commenced harvest 3 weeks later than in the last
few years, as the cooler conditions delayed the grapes ripening.
Our Chardonnay was the largest tonnage we have ever produced
and was picked completely free of any disease.
It has all been crushed to produce PJ's Sparkling Chardonnay.
Peter Douglas our winemaker says "It is looking very good."
On the 20th March we had some light rain and very humid
weather and this was very bad and un-welcome. The Shiraz
was just ripening and had higher sugar levels which enabled
Botrytis to infect some of the berries.
We managed to purchase the last available sprays, which had become
very limited and stop the spread of the disease in our vineyard.
50% of our Shiraz was ruined, and we were suddenly left short of Shiraz.
Angas Plains Wines has not produced any Shiraz in 2011.
The good news is that the Cabernet Sauvignon ripened beautifully and
was picked without any disease. We are extremely happy with the
flavours and have crushed larger volumes this vintage.
Peter requested that Judy purchase new French Oak barrels for the wine.
He is quietly confident that we may be producing a Special Reserve this vintage.
As many know we judge the wines on its merit so the final decision
will be made at a future tasting.
The other exciting news regarding this vintage is that we are going
to produce Angas Plains Estate first Sparkling Cabernet Sauvignon.
Unsure what we will name it though, any suggestions welcome!
Judy Carol and Hayley were also very busy cooking up the lots of jars PJ's Cabernet Crush. It has become very popular recently.
Now sold in many Gourmet Food Outlets in South Australia.
