PJ's News

This year we have had lot of great things come our way and last Friday was a special time as our Angas Plains Special Reserve Cabernet 2006 was awarded The Champion Wine of The Langhorne Creek Showcase.

We received this surprise honor at The Winemakers Luncheon in front of industry guests and colleagues. This low volume bottling was chosen from the best barrels of the 2006 vintage and left to age for a total of 26 months in French Oak Barriques.

It is always special to receive an award but it is even a greater thrill to be recognized in your own area. If you are interested in this special low volume excellent value wine please let us know as the interest has been high and these wines are soon expected to be a rarity. The sales promotion for our PJs Shiraz 2005 has been extremely successful and so we have sold out, as just a couple of days ago the very last carton went out of the Cellar Door .

We have now released the PJs Shiraz 2006 and since everybody always likes to try the new releases, now is an excellent time to drop into Cellar Door for a taste. If you are a keen Shiraz fan or are too far away to make a flying visit to the Cellar Door and would rather the wine be sent directly to you, simply order on line. Please feel free to email any comments you may have also.

The 2005 PJ's Cabernet Sauvignon is a delicious wine showing all the cabernet varietal characteristics and the well known delightful Langhorne Creek regional soft tannins but still obviously taken from the Angas Plains Vineyards.

This wine has now been aged for 4 years and is sealed with natural cork. We have decided to celebrate our Cabernet's success and offere a free gift, a branded PJ's Wine bottle opener valued at $14.95 free while stocks last, when purchasing a dozen of these wines. These are always handy especially if your friends are used to dealing with screw caps and there is no opener around for that special bottle. This year we had our best ever Grape Stomping Lunch so far as the weather was fantastic, the food was great, the music rocked and the wine flowed freely.

People were soon squashing the grapes under their toes, eating singing and dancing the afternoon away. The afternoon was even better than it sounds but you can check it out yourself on our website as Karen took lots of photo's www.angasplainswines.com.au/events

Our Vintage The low level of winter rain coupled with minimal water holdings available to irrigate the vines, meant that our fruit had intense flavors but the cropping levels were very low. Since the vines had a low loading of fruit, ripening occurred early in the season and so the vintage was over very quickly for us with our last pick on the 13th March. This made for a hectic schedule as we organized the Grape Stomping through the height of grape picking activity.

We have made more of our Cabernet Sauvignon Jam and Shiraz sauces this year, as they are gaining their own popularity. They will be soon available to buy online and in more stores.  We are just waiting on new labels to be printed.  Some of you may have seen the article in the Indulge section of the Advertiser recently. Tony Love wrote"owner Judy Cross does more with Cabernet than the usual, not only is the estate's PJ's Cabernet very smart but also her cabernet  jam with cream on cellar baked scones are awesome."  Why don't you try some when visiting our cellar door.

Bottling It seems just when you think that it is time for a break, the next phase of the cycle becomes pressingly urgent. Recently we tasted all the 2008 and 2009 wines with Peter our winemaker and are very pleased with the flavor development of the wines. Wines at this very early stage are very different to the final versions that you get to taste after release, but it is very interesting to remember the individual wine’s development. This is a prelude to working out our bottling logistics and soon we will be working out schedules and requirements.

Water remains our  major issue, as many ask when talking to us.  We are rejoicing that it has started to rain as we were down to our last few litres.  We hope that you all get nice winter rains that can refresh your gardens and surroundings.

We believe we need multiple sources of water supply to ensure our production so are continuing to work on this. This week we have a drilling team on site attempting to drill us a new bore as our old bore is just pumping sand, our fingers and toes are all crossed. Langhorne Creek growers including ourselves are preparing to purchase shares into a new pipeline scheme which will enable us to have water pumped from the River Murray near Tailem Bend to our exisiting pipeline system.  This is required due to the current lack of water in Lake Alexandrina which as many know has become a major disaster for all concerned and future generations.

This Sunday 10th May is Mother's Day and on this day everyone just likes to have some time to eat and talk in a relaxed setting. So we are offering you a relaxed afternoon at our cellar door. We will be serving a 3 course lunch so book and treat your mum a nice afternoon out. $30/Adults $10/Child bookings Phone 85373159 or email admin@angasplainswines.com.au or Mother's Day Lunch Bookings

Judy's Tip

Mother's Day on Sunday is reminder to us all to appreciate our mothers.  Phil & I are very lucky as we get to see our mum's most weeks.  They have lived very active lives and are inspirational to us both, and we love heaps.

As a mother and now a grandmother I treasure moments with my daughters and grand children, and even though we can spend the time together on Sunday we will have some special times together soon.

I often sing (to myself the chorus as I think it relates families today) Cats in the Craddle  and I'm sure many of you can relate to the song as many of us have hectic lives.

So my tip is to take a little time out, and share some quality moments with your mum and loved ones if possible.

Cheers

Judy
